This week we celebrated our little Emmie's 2nd birthday, I can't believe she is 2 already, it seems like no time ago we were bringing her home from the hospital and settling into life as a little family. We had the whole big party thing for her 1st birthday but this year we decided not to. I figure we have many years to come when she will want one so we might as well make the most of having a quiet family celebration whilst we still can. I did however want to make her a few birthday treats including the obligatory birthday cake. When we were growing up our mum always made the most amazing hand baked and decorated cakes, from care bears to Noddy and big ears, space ships, boats and giant burgers it leaves just a little to live up to when it comes to making birthday cakes for our little ones. As we remember her home made creations so fondly I am determined to at least try to give Emmie the same memories of her mummies efforts at birthday cakes. After a great deal of time spent trawling Pinterest for ideas I came up with a plan for a cream cheese frosted red velvet cake decorated with little hedgehogs, toadstools and mini birthday bunting. Not surprisingly the mini bunting was easily dealt with first and was no problem at all but I may have roped in my brother to help with the red velvet cake. I will admit now that it didn't come out all that red but it tasted great and I love how the cake looked all finished off with its little decorations :) The hat was made from some scrapbook papers that I have had for ages and was made using a pattern found on Pinterest again and finished off with a little heart button and a pompom made on a fork, you don't need anything fancy to make your very own birthday hat and I think its so much nicer than a shop bought one and it actually lasted the day surprisingly well, Emmie seemed to love wearing it :)
Last up on the list of handmade goodies for my wee girls special day was a birthday badge, last year she got a couple of little badges on her birthday cards but she didn't get any this year and as we were off out to the Scottish Dear Centre for the day I wanted her to have a special little badge to show that she was now a big 2 year old. I am very good at leaving things till the last minute when they are for my own family so I must admit to getting the sewing machine out on the morning of her birthday to create this little beauty but I love how it turned out and it will be a lovely keepsake of her turning 2 and I intend to make her one for each of her birthdays and pop them away along with a picture of her wearing them for her to get out to look at when she is bigger. If you would like to order one for your little ones birthday then just send us a message :) They can be made in any colours and for any age and we can personalise them with your little ones name too if you would like. |
